Willow Glen is the older San Jose neighbourhood north-east of us, built in the 1920s and 30s around Lincoln Avenue with Spanish, craftsman and storybook bungalows on deep, narrow lots. It has a village feel that the rest of the city does not, and a garage arrangement that goes with the era.
The classic Willow Glen garage is detached, single-width, at the very back of the lot, reached by a strip driveway barely wider than a car. That produces a specific set of problems: openings two or three inches off any modern standard, original timber framing that has settled, a long and often ancient wiring run to the opener, and remote range that has to work from the street end rather than the garage. It also means there is nowhere to stage a truck carelessly. We arrive expecting all of that, with legacy hardware and the intention of measuring rather than assuming.
